Finally, an app that gives directions the way a person would.

Mapkin is a driving app that not only gives you the route, it gives you driving instructions based on major landmarks, traffic and other obstacles that might cross your path.

The app launched yesterday in the App Store, and its creators took to Product Hunt, too:

“GPS has two jobs — to pick the best route, and to guide you along it. Many apps have become very good at picking routes,” wrote co-creator Marc Regan. “But there’s been little innovation in the voice instructions that help you safely follow the route.

“We believe this is the next big opportunity in navigation — creating a safer, less stressful, more natural driving experience. When you’re driving with Mapkin, you’re hearing a mix of high visibility landmarks, local tips, and street names that more closely resembles the way a person sitting next to you would give directions.”

Regan told us via email that “the really cool thing is anyone using Mapkin can easily leave a tips that we’ll quickly turn into new directions for everyone.”

So far, they have pretty high ratings on the App store — 43 reviews with an average of five stars — and nearly 250 upvotes on Product Hunt.
