Stephen Powers with his partially completed mural at First and Virginia in Seattle.

Noted artist Stephen “ESPO” Powers is spray-painting his first mural in Seattle right now, on a building at First Avenue and Virginia Street in Belltown, following his appearance this week at the Seattle Interactive Conference.

And there’s a surprise waiting for people who stop by to watch Powers at work. If you download the Mixby app from Seattle startup Artifact Technologies and stand next to the nearby entrance of the Vain hair salon, a beacon will unlock a special “mosaic” of content related to the project and Powers, including images taken by other users of the mural in progress.

It’s the latest in a series of beacon installations for Artifact, which also placed beacons at SIC to unlock content for attendees.

The mural at First and Virginia is full of references to technology and geek culture, such as “no love” between Android and iPhone cables, and a reference to “still running Windows.”

“It’s an a la carte buffet — you can have it all, or you can have none of it,” Powers explained during a break this afternoon in the parking lot where he’s working. “If you have the appetite for it, there’s a lot here.”

Powers is expected to complete at least one more mural in Seattle over the weekend. Here are more pictures from the work in progress in Belltown.
