applepay829Apple Pay seems to be catching on — at least with consumers.

Speaking at the WSJ.D conference on Monday, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that there were more than one million credit card activations through Apple Pay during the first 72 hours of its existence.

Cook called the early adoption of Apple Pay system “fantastic,” and said that it is already the nation’s largest mobile wallet program.

“It’s the first and only mobile payment system that’s easy, private and secure,” he said.

Cook also noted the “skirmish” with retailers like CVS and Rite Aid that are prohibiting customers from using Apple Pay because they are part of the Merchant Customer Exchange (MCX), a consortium of merchants led by Walmart that has teamed up to create its own mobile payment system.

“In the long arc of time, you only are relevant as a retailer or a merchant if you customers love you,” Cook said.

There are several other retailers that have adopted Apple Pay, including Nike, Macy’s, and McDonald’s. Check out our initial test of the payment system here.
