Amazon Web Services chief Andy Jassy will take the stage shortly in Las Vegas for the company’s annual re:Invent conference, but one of his announcements has leaked out in advance: AWS has surpassed 1 million business and governmental customers, Jassy tells the Wall Street Journal in an interview.

Amazon, which is facing stiff competition in the cloud from Microsoft, Google and others in the cloud, has previously said its customer number in the hundreds of thousands. The company doesn’t disclose AWS revenue, but estimates put the figure at $4 billion a year.

Update: In his intro at the conference, Jassy showed this chart, disclosing AWS revenue growth of more than 40 percent year-over year (without giving the actual revenue figures) and saying Amazon Web Services is the “fastest-growing enterprise IT company in the world.”

awschart

Note: Post corrected to clarify that Amazon’s revenue growth was more than 40 percent, not just 40 percent.
