Facebook users on Amazon’s Fire tablets will soon see new ads for apps they can install. Amazon announced today that developers can use Facebook’s ad targeting tools to reach Fire Tablet users, prompting them to install apps from Amazon’s Appstore.

FireTablet_Family-1It’s big news for Amazon app developers and Facebook. App install ads have been some of Facebook’s most popular and most profitable ad formats on mobile, and expanding its reach to the Fire tablets just in time for the holiday shopping season could translate into increased revenue for the social network.

In addition, app developers who want to reach people right after they’ve unwrapped a new Amazon tablet will now be able to do so and boost their sales. Amazon’s tablets usually spike in popularity at Christmas, so reaching users right as they’re getting set up (and installing a bunch of new apps) could be a boon.

The offering could help shore up one of the weaknesses of Amazon’s tablet and smartphone ecosystem. Because the company uses its own flavor of Android called FireOS, Google will not allow it to license Google Play Services, which includes the popular Google Play Store for Android apps. Amazon has tried to make it as easy as possible for people to migrate their applications over to its AppStore, but not everyone has. These ads are another incentive for developers to give Amazon’s platform a shot.
