monet

A $2.5 million Monet? Sure, what the heck, add it to the cart. Just make sure 1-Click ordering isn’t turned on.

Amazon_Art_logoIn a surreal collision of e-commerce and fine art, Amazon.com this morning launched “Amazon Art,” a new online marketplace that offers up some 40,000 works of art from 150 galleries and dealers. Monet’s Fragment de Nymphéas actually isn’t the most expensive piece in the marketplace — that distinction goes to a $4.85 million Norman Rockwell — but there are also plenty of sub-$100 options from which to choose.

This is part of a broader expansion that has also seen Amazon get into the wine business. Amazon calls the art marketplace “one of the largest online collections of original and limited edition artwork for purchase directly from galleries and dealers.”

“We are excited to bring one of the largest selections of fine art direct from galleries to our customers. Amazon Art gives galleries a way to bring their passion and expertise about the artists they represent to our millions of customers,” said Amazon Marketplace VP Peter Faricy in a news release this morning. “We’re thrilled to bring the excitement and emotional connection of art to our customers.”

If you’re in the mood to browse, or buy, the Amazon Art home page is here.
