Microsoft plans to release a new Windows Phone app that let Xbox 360 users find, launch and control content on the game console from their Windows Phones.

The upcoming Xbox Companion App was previewed by the company’s Windows Phone team this morning in conjunction with Microsoft’s announcement of a new Xbox TV service for the game console.

The company isn’t giving a release date but says it will be out soon, free to Windows Phone users.

Controlling content on the television from a smartphone isn’t a new concept, but it’s an example of Microsoft trying to create better integration between its consumer product lines.

The company previously showed a technology demo of Windows Phone working in conjunction with a game on the Xbox 360, but hasn’t yet brought that capability to market.

Here’s a Microsoft video that shows the Windows Phone Xbox Companion app around the 1:00 mark.
