How to Win at Ping Pong
- Learn what grip suits you best. Similar in importance to deciding between the Continental and American style of eating, your grip should be relaxed and feel comfortable.
- Determine your playing style. Some players prefer to develop a killer serve and top-spin techniques to provide quick wins while others prefer to wear down their opponent through classic volleys with a simple hit.
- Practice makes perfect. Experience other styles and learn to anticipate types of hits by continually upping your game through new opponent matches. I personally recommend seeking out Olympic players or serious-looking players in track suits and sweatbands.
- Choose your equipment wisely. Speaking of track suits and sweatbands – intimidate other players by wearing your own track suit.
- Visualize. Yogi Berra believed baseball was 90% mental and the other half physical. Since baseball and ping pong share a common love of hitting things, this statement is probably true for ping pong too. Load up on watching classic ping pong tournaments and the movie Balls of Fury.
- Right before a game, ensure your muscles are warmed up and ready for some action. Consider a quick jog or Qigong to clear your mind. Avoid heavy foods such as Hot Pockets or Chicken Fried Steak – this may cause cramping during the game.
