Description

So glad you decided to check out SEOmoz! We are looking to hire an addition to our production engineering team, and if you have experience working with production code and are able to learn fast, this could be a great place for you!
If you love doing the following things, you may be a great candidate for our Production Engineering team:
You are able to quickly grasp enough of the big picture to dive straight into the details
You really care about code and enjoying digging into existing projects, learning them, fixing them and then moving on.
You are passionate about customers and delivering high quality products and services
You can learn anything quickly
You like moving between tasks and codebases, and solving tough weird problems is your thing
We are looking for a software engineer/hacker to do jack-of-all trades work on our codebases. Our dream-candidate has the skills of a contractor: able to quickly understand how systems work with little or no documentation and an interest in figuring out existing systems, but the attention to detail of an artist- quality code, smart engineering, follow up and ownership of deliverables. This person must love solving problems, and figuring out existing products and code.
The occasional happy hour, doughnut, cupcake, ice-cream party, BBQ and catered lunches/breakfasts would have to be appreciated, too. ;-)
To be a Mozzer in Production Engineering, you must:
Be a programming whiz with experience or proclivity towards production systems!
Ruby is our primary language, but your willingness to learn can/will be taken into consideration.
Production systems are on Linux
Have a good sense of humor, and the intro to Battlestar Gallactica as your ringtone :)
Have a desire to work with a bunch of hard core technologists, building some stellar software.
Find yourself daydreaming about code spelunking and finding simple elegant fixes to complex, constrained problems..
Always be learning.
If this describes you, by all means keep reading! We want you!
About the position:
Responsibilities:
Learn, Maintain, Improve and Fix highly-scalable, production systems.
Implement and improve deployment, monitoring, testing and operational tools.
Develop incremental new features and improve existing systems
Be an excellent problem solver, and willing to roll up sleeves to tackle any issue thrown your way
Reliably respond to on-call issues when needed
Production support:
200+ ec2 instances and terrabytes of S3.
20+ hosted application servers
6+ Mysql servers (Master/slave config + backups)
4+ Redis servers
8 Riak nodes
Networking (Cisco PIX, Coyote Pt load balancers, DNS)
System monitoring (Pingdom, Zabbix, New Relic, Librato)
Requirements:
Proficiency with Linux as an operating environment
Familiarity with Ruby
Experience with Amazon AWS (S3, ec2, ELB, EBD, ETC)
Familiarity with source control. Github preferred.
Familiarity with Mysql and noSQL (Riak, Cassandra)
Familiarity with Rails applications and Apache2.
Computer Science degree preferred.
Joining SEOmoz would a great opportunity to learn new technology and show your skills enhancing what is already in place. We run part of our systems in the cloud, part hosted, and development is virtualized.
Why work with us?
SEOmoz is a small (just 73 of us today) but rapidly-growing, profitable technology startup. That said, we dream big--we aim to provide companies with the best, most advanced ways to measure and improve their organic web marketing (i.e. any traffic source you don’t pay for - SEO, social, blogs, viral videos, etc.).
We’ve got the reputation of a big player with the energy of a young, nimble organization. This allows us to do very exciting things when we smell opportunity. We pride ourselves on developing kick-ass software, out of this world customer service and our cutting edge cloud computing technology.
In our downtown Seattle offices, mere steps from Pike Place Market, we maintain a fun, supportive, laid-back work environment. We pay well (salaries are on par with the big guys - Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Sauron) and we work hard (sometimes long hours are a must, but we pride ourselves on working smart, not 80-hour nightmare weeks). We’re also very generous with vacation and flex time because we understand that our employees have lives, interests, and obligations outside of the office.
Not to toot our own horn, but..., we were just selected as one of the Best Places To Work in Seattle!
Our core values include being transparent (you’ll get every key metric about the business each week), having fun (pie-eating contests - check! Team bowling trips - check! Friday afternoon Kinect dance parties - check!) and creating exceptional products our customers love. We strongly encourage you to read more about the company - our core values (http://www.seomoz.org/blog/what-we-believe-why-seomozs-tagfee-tenets), our history (http://www.seomoz.org/blog/the-history-of-seomoz) and what we do (http://www.seomoz.org/about).
Compensation:
We’re offering a very competitive salary for this position (based on experience), in order to attract exciting candidates. In addition, we also provide:
$12,000 signing bonus
A relocation package of up to $10,000 to help move you to the Seattle area (if you're not currently here)
$5,000 shopping spree to outfit your office or home workspace with the technology (hardware, software, accessories, chair/desk/etc.) you need to do your best work
Generous stock options (1 year to first stake, 4 years to full vesting)
21 days annual paid time off
Opportunities to travel and attend/speak at industry events
Paid Internet access for your home
Multiple transportation options (Bus Pass, Flexcar, parking, etc.)
Great benefits (medical, dental, etc.)
Catered hot lunch Thursdays
Catered hot breakfast Wednesdays
Fully-stocked fridge, bar, cereal bar and all the turkey jerky and candy you want!
