Job Summary:
As a Senior Database Administrator Avalara, you will be part of a Team responsible for lifecycle care and feeding of the Avalara SaaS suite of services. Focusing on the efficiency, process improvements, security, reliability and high availability of our MS SQL Server database and Business Intelligence systems, this new position will join the Data Systems Team as we expand the capabilities of our core services and manage for the exponential growth we continue to experience. The role supports multiple projects and requires interactions and partnerships with teams and personnel from multiple business locations, skill sets, and backgrounds. As such, the new DBA will have the opportunity to share their strong communication skills, solid technical skills, resolute analytical abilities, and expert knowledge of database design and function with others throughout the organization as we grow our systems capabilities to prepare for the future.

Job Duties:
In order to fully support the ambitious goals resident in our rapidly growing, highly collaborative, and dynamic environment, you must stay abreast of industry best practices, methods, and technologies and bring the best of the best into the workplace. You will be challenged to manage all aspects of highly transactional data-driven OLTP and reporting systems for today’s business needs as well as the need as well as those of tomorrow. In any day you may be called upon to leverage your expert-level knowledge in SQL Server internals and best practices to troubleshoot a performance issue, automate a process, upgrade software, plan for increased capacity, tune a process or procedure, deploy database or report code, document a process, design a database, or test or embellish a DR plan. Or you may be asked to manage robust Microsoft Reporting Services farms or leverage Integration Services to improve the movement of terabytes of data through the warehouse and into Analysis Services cubes. You will work closely with Development to migrate products throughout the entire software development lifecycle and provide mentoring and leadership within technical and non-technical departments where needed. You will work with the Business or Business Analysts to develop logical data models, technical specifications, and service level agreements for capacity, performance and reliability requirements for new and existing applications. And you will participate in a scheduled on call rotation and provide hands-on technical escalation support as needed.

Qualifications:
1. Experience designing, implementing, and maintaining highly available MSSQL database systems in a SaaS environment.
2. Deep expertise in configuration and tuning, backup and recovery, file management, cluster configuration, storage subsystem design, replication, mirroring, log shipping, database maintenance, and index optimization.
3. Expertise in MS SQL Server and the entire Business Intelligence suite, including SQL Server internal operations and SQL query optimization for large databases in a 24x7 environment.
4. 6 plus years’ experience implementing and maintaining enterprise level database solutions using Microsoft SQL Server in a high transaction and/or large database environment.
5. Optional but a huge plus: Experience with Open source RDBMS systems and/or NoSQL solutions.
