Innovation Lab – Software Development

We are looking for great software developers who are passionate about exploring new technologies and new ways to apply technology. We dream up what may be the next big thing in fashion or retail experiences then create experiments to test the desirability, feasibility, and viability of our ideas. You would be responsible for contributing through the full cycle of our process including understanding customers, ideation, designing experiments, and building then running the experiments.

Who we are
The Nordstrom Innovation Lab is a small team whose mission is to revolutionize retail and fashion. We are a team of techies and creative people, all of whom have breadth of knowledge outside our primary area of expertise. We are a fast-paced and energetic team where experimentation trumps hunches in decision making. The lab is a startup within a well-established company, giving our team members the best of both worlds.

We don’t just dream up big ideas but also validate them before the great reveal. We are quick enough to turn experiments around in a week, but usability, design, and creating something eye-catching are all still important to us.

The Nordstrom Innovation Lab is an extreme self-organizing team. As a member of the lab you would decide which project to work on. You also have the opportunity to switch projects, and it’s easy to do – just roll your desk to the new team space! We also dedicate Friday to inspiration and research so that we can stay on top of new developments. Choose your own adventure.

Our core values are maintaining a focus on solving customer problems, trust & teamwork, learning, and having fun. We have a living room area where casual meetings can be held. And each week we hold a retrospective at a bar where we discuss how to improve our work and bond with the team. We are able to reach decisions quickly and are able to handle many situations with ease.

What you will do
No two days are exactly the same in the lab, but here are some frequent activities:
•Interact with customers to build empathy
•Participate in brainstorming of new ideas
•Work with our designers to figure out what the new experience will be
•Design experiments to help us make decisions
•Research new technologies to get the job done
•Pair with another developer to write great code.
•Pair with a designer to make your feature look great
•Instrument your code to capture data about how people behave with the new experience
•Review experiment data with the team to decide on the next course of action
•Use your unique super powers to do something amazing.

You
•Have mastered at least one programming language, but are not married to it. We frequently use Rails, Node.JS, or iOS. We’re always trying new things too.
•Have diverse technical skills.
