Streaming media on your TV is a fractured environment, with Amazon persona non grata at Apple, and iTunes purchases locked to the Apple TV. If you want the most options for streaming shows and movies to your TV, get the just-updated Roku 2.

Roku has always had a huge selection, including major players like Amazon Instant Streaming and Netflix, as well as a host of more obscure “channels” like PlanesTrainsAutomobilesCooking Outdoors and UFCTV. The only big thing its missing is access to all your iTunes purchases. To find what you’re looking for across all those channels, Roku has a unified search for films, shows, actors and directors that searches all your subscriptions and free options.

While the unified search is great, the real standout feature across the Roku lineup is the Roku Feed. You can add movies currently in theaters to a list and Roku will notify you when they are available on your favorite channels.

The newly updated Roku 2 has almost the same internals as the Roku 3, including an upgraded processor, providing a snappy response when trying to find what to watch. If you want to upgrade, the $100 Roku 3 does have voice search, making unified search all that much easier. But most people should be fine with the $70 Roku 2.
