lifelinemergedNotifications are pretty powerful. With the latest smartphone operating systems, you can reply to messages, move emails to the trash and even pay for groceries without ever unlocking your phone. But playing a game on your lock screen may be the coolest way to take advantage of these rich notifications.

Lifeline… was previously our App of the Week, and not just for its novel use of notifications. The story is surprisingly fun and dark. The game lets you talk to a high-school student stranded on a deserted moon after a trip to space goes haywire. You help the student, Taylor, decide his next steps by replying with preset answers. Basically, it’s a choose-your-own-adventure story told through notification-sized texts.

The game is also pretty great on the Apple Watch, which lets you interact with notifications just like you can on your phone. It’s normally $2.99, but you can get it now for free. And if you’ve already played it, check it out again: the team recently added a brand new short story you can play through now.
