Amazon-owned Ring is taking on traditional home security systems and fellow tech companies like Google with its new Ring Alarm product.

Ring Alarm is an expansion of the company’s video doorbell and security cameras. The $199 home security kit includes a base station, keypad, contact sensor, motion detector, and range extender. It syncs with Ring’s doorbells and cameras, and can be controlled with the Ring app. Customers can add 24/7 professional monitoring and cellular backup for $10 per month. It starts shipping July 4 and pre-orders are available today.

Ring Alarm was initially called Ring Protect, which was announced this past October. But the company ran into a lawsuit filed by ADT, which claimed that Ring stole technology for the product, and had to halt sales.

Ring Alarm competes directly with Google-owned Nest, which sells its own home security system for $399. Nest also sells video doorbells and security cameras.

Amazon’s acquisition of Ring was first reported by GeekWire on Feb. 27. When the deal closed in April, Amazon dropped the price of the Santa Monica, Calif.-company’s original video doorbell to $99.99, from $179.

Ring will continue to operate independently, but the companies said they “will work together to accelerate Ring’s mission to reduce crime in neighborhoods with affordable, effective home security products and services.”

The acquisition promises to move Amazon and its Alexa voice assistant further into the home security market. However, a Ring spokeperson tells GeekWire, “Ring Alarm does not work with Amazon Alexa at this time,” noting that they “will make product decisions based on what will best empower Neighbors with an affordable, effective way to monitor their homes.”

Amazon now has three separate lines of home security cameras. The others are the Blink smart home camera products, which it acquired last year; and Amazon’s homegrown Cloud Cam.

Ring last month launched its new Neighbors app.
