If you’re an eSports skeptic, hold onto your hats: the NBA announced this week that it is adding eSports teams to every NBA franchise in the country, in partnership with Take-Two, makers of the popular NBA 2K video game series.

Yes, each NBA team will soon have its own professional gamers in addition to pro ballers. While it might not get hardcore NBA fans excited, the move could be a major-money maker for the league and a boost for the still-emerging world of professional video game playing.

And as you’ll hear on this episode of GeekWire’s Week in Geek podcast, at least one Seattleite is hoping the city could get a virtual team while it awaits the return of its beloved Seattle Sonics, which moved to Oklahoma City in 2008.

GeekWire editor Todd Bishop and sports tech reporter Taylor Soper discuss the potential for the NBA’s new approach, as well as the announcement that Twitter will be deepening its partnership with the NFL after one year of an experimental live-streaming deal.

We also crunched some numbers from Amazon’s earnings reports to discover that the free shipping the company offers to Amazon Prime members cost it a staggering $7 billion in 2016. That’s likely why Amazon is expanding its own delivery network and investing in infrastructure like planes and cargo ships.

Plus, news from local tech giants: Amazon is building yet another office building in Seattle — this one is only 17 stories tall — and Microsoft launches a new Cortana feature that will hold users accountable to promises they make, even if they forget about them.
