Nearly a decade ago, in 2008, Bill Gates stepped down from his day-to-day role at Microsoft. A daily newspaper reporter in Seattle at the time, I had the rare privilege of interviewing him with a colleague on one of his final days in the Microsoft executive suite.

So it was a especially interesting to sit down with Gates recently at his private office to catch up on everything he has been doing over the past nine years, as reflected in the annual Gates Foundation letter from Bill and Melinda Gates, released today.
