Seattle Mayor Ed Murray announced his resignation Tuesday, hours after The Seattle Times published an interview in which his cousin, Joseph Dyer accused him of sexual abuse as a child. Dyer is the latest in a series of men to accuse the mayor of molestation when they were minors.

“While the allegations against me are not true, it is important that my personal issues do not affect the ability of our City government to conduct the public’s business,” Murray said in a statement announcing his resignation. Murray did not plan to seek re-election for another term. Former U.S. Attorney Jenny Durkan and urban planner Cary Moon are running for the seat. In the meantime, City Councilmember Bruce Harrell will take over mayoral duties and decide whether to fill out the remainder of the term within the next few days, according to The Seattle Times.
