Docker is launching a new Enterprise Edition of its popular software container technology, along with an initiative to let partners certify their technology as compatible with the new edition, and sell their solutions in a centralized online store.
The new initiatives, announced this morning, are the latest moves by San Francisco-based Docker Inc. to boost adoption of the technology, which has emerged as a key behind-the-scenes tool for the cloud industry. Docker is the leading example of container technology, which lets developers bundle up the components of an app to easily develop and deploy software across different platforms and devices.
The new Docker Enterprise Edition runs on operating systems and cloud providers including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, CentOS, Oracle Linux, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE, Ubuntu and Windows Server 2016. It expands on the previous Docker Commercially Supported edition.
Docker Enterprise Edition includes a container runtime, integrated orchestration, security and management. Pricing for the basic Enterprise Edition starts at $750/year, standard at $1,500/year and advanced at $2,000/year.
In addition, Docker renamed the free version of the open-source technology the Docker Community Edition.
