Amazon customers could someday be able to use PayPal for their purchases.
In an interview with Bloomberg News, PayPal CEO Dan Schulman said the company has had discussions with Amazon about partnering, although he didn’t provide further details or disclose the current status of the talks.
“We’re closing in on 200 million users on our platform right now,” Schulman told Bloomberg News. “At that scale, it’s hard for any retailer to think about not accepting PayPal.”
Amazon, so far, has declined to comment. The Seattle-based online retail giant expanded its own payment service last April, allowing customers to use their Amazon login credentials to purchase goods on partner sites. The move put Amazon in more direct competition with PayPal.
PayPal separated from eBay in 2015, opening the door to more partnerships with other retailers.
Paypal’s stock was down more than 3 percent this morning following its earnings report yesterday.
