Sounders fans have a new tech tool available to watch on-demand highlights, interviews, and other team-related videos.

As part of a new deal with DeskSite, the Sounders recently launched the “Sounders FC DeskSite,” a desktop application that lets fans watch HD videos both online and offline.

After installling the app for Windows or Mac, users can watch downloaded videos that play without buffering. DeskSite, which develops similar apps for more than 20 other NFL, NHL, and MLS teams, likens the software to “a DVR for the Internet,” with content stored to a user’s laptop or computer that can play without an Internet connection after downloading.

The Sounders DeskSite hub has a bevy of videos that play immediately — some of which the team calls “exclusive — which is nice for those that have spotty Internet connections. It also lets people browse the team’s website and social channels, though the built-in browser is a little cumbersome to use. The software is built for desktop specifically, so there are no DeskSite mobile apps.

For fans, this provides another avenue to stay up-to-date with the team or learn more about the players and coaches. One advantage DeskSite provides for teams is its advertising technology, with the company describes as “consumption-based ad loading”:

This patent-pending ad tech tracks the amount of time viewers spend watching entertainment content on our app network and then automatically inserts ads as a ‘percentage of content actually viewed’ (rather than the mindless ‘click-based’ ad rotation that websites rely upon today). This process will revolutionize the way viewers experience online video advertising, while driving up viewership and reducing clutter.
