Levi’s Stadium now has the first-ever food farm atop a professional sports venue.

Home to the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers, the high-tech stadium today unveiled its new vegetable and herb garden named the Faithful Farm.

A rotation of nearly 40 organic crops — from tomatoes to peppers to eggplants to herbs — will be harvested at the 4,000 square-foot farm and used in dishes served at club spaces and private events at Levi’s Stadium.

The Faithful Farm will produce an average of 150 pounds of produce per week, or 7,500 pounds of produce per year.

“We’re proud to reinforce Levi’s Stadium as an industry leader in environmental sustainability with the addition of the Faithful Farm,” Jim Mercurio, San Francisco 49ers vice president of stadium operations & general manager, said in a statement. “Our 27,000 square foot green roof successfully helps reduce heating and cooling requirements within our suite tower and carving out this small portion to grow crops for use in the stadium further minimizes our carbon footprint by reducing our reliance on outside food sources.”

In addition to its many high-tech features, Levi’s Stadium is also one of the more sustainable stadiums in sports. When it opened two years ago, it was the first NFL stadium to achieve LEED Gold certification.
