If last week’s GeekWire Bash is any indication, geeks in Seattle love their sports. So tech workers around the city and on the Eastside should be excited to learn that a new Information Technology Sports League is getting off the ground this summer with the hopes of promoting camaraderie and competition within the industry.

Steve Mayeda is heading up the effort to start the co-ed league and he’s looking for eight teams to play softball starting June 6. The plan is to have two four-team divisions — one in Seattle and one in Bellevue.

Mayeda, who is semi-retired, has previously worked for Avvo and Datasphere, and he once ran a Radio, Advertising, Television (RAT) League for about 10 years.

“I’ve limited it this first year to eight teams because I don’t want to bite off more than I can chew,” Mayeda said.

He was apprehensive about going across Lake Washington, but the draw of Eastside tech companies and some good playing fields made it too good to pass up.

The league has partnered with the Seattle Parks Department, Bellevue Parks Department and Northwest Umpires Association.

Mayeda said each team will play once a week, so there will be four games a week across the league on Seattle fields such as Interbay, Queen Anne, Ballard and Lower Woodland as well as Hidden Valley in Bellevue.

At the end of the regular season there will be a championship tournament with the winners getting a trophy and bragging rights for the year.

“I’m trying to come up with something that would be synonymous to the IT industry — x’s and o’s or something,” Mayeda said of the title trophy. “I want it to be perpetual so that it moves around.”

Mayeda plans to keep the league running into the fall with co-ed soccer and then basketball in the winter.

The softball registration fee is $1,500 per team. Check out the IT Sports League website for more information and to sign up a team from your company.
