Glassdoor is back with its annual rankings of “Best Places to Work” and Facebook took the top spot for tech companies.
The social media giant finished No. 2 overall, behind Bain & Company, for Glassdoor’s annual list, which pulls data from surveys that ask U.S.-based employees about career opportunities, compensation, senior management, work/life balance, culture, and more. Headquartered in Silicon Valley, Facebook also has big offices in Seattle, where it continues to grow its workforce.
There were six tech companies among the top 10, including Google (No. 4), World Wide Technology (No. 5), Fast Enterprises (No. 6), LinkedIn (No. 8), and Adobe (No. 9). Airbnb, which took the No. 1 spot of all companies last year, fell to No. 35. Apple ranked No. 36; it’s one of three companies, including Google and Bain & Company, to make the top 50 each year since Glassdoor began releasing the annual list in 2009.
DocuSign, which launched out of Seattle and has a large office in the city, ranked No. 23. Other Seattle-area companies include Concur (24th), Zillow (29th), Costco Wholesale (34th), Microsoft (37th), and Aegis Living (46th). This is Microsoft’s first time making the top 50 list.
For this particular list, companies are required to have at least 1,000 employees and 75 company reviews on Glassdoor, which uses an algorithm to calculate the rankings that assesses the quantity, quality and consistency of Glassdoor-approved company reviews shared by U.S.-based employees between November 2, 2015 and October 30, 2016.
Glassdoor also released a list for the best small and medium-sized companies. Greenhouse Software, Illuminate Education, and Entelo took the top spots. Seattle-area companies on the list include RealSelf at No. 17 and Chef Software at No. 22.
Founded in 2007 by Expedia and Zillow co-founder Rich Barton, along with his former Expedia colleague Robert Hohman, Glassdoor has a database of more than 600,000 companies with reviews and ratings across 190 countries. There are 34 million unique visitors to the site each month. The company raised a $40 million investment round in June, pushing total funding to date to $200 million and valuing the company around $1 billion.
