Cole Wetle and Alissa Lawhon were dressed as the characters Celes Chere and her love interest Locke Cole from “Final Fantasy VI” this morning, as they got ready to leave Seattle’s Queen Anne neighborhood for the PAX West game convention. They launched the Uber app to get a ride downtown. That’s when they saw it: a tiny Chocobo icon, representing the recurring bird characters in the Final Fantasy series, and the abbreviation “FFXV.”
How could they not select that option?
“It was like my ‘Final Fantasy’ Cinderella, to go to PAX and get out of a Chocobo as a Final Fantasy character,” Lawhon said after arriving at the Washington State Convention Center with Wetle in a yellow Mini Cooper with tail feathers.
The ride, which featured Final Fantasy XV music and video footage, was the result of a partnership between Uber and Final Fantasy developer Square Enix, promoting the upcoming Final Fantasy XV, due for release in November. It’s one of several Final Fantasy vehicles deployed by Uber for PAX West as part of the partnership.
The promotion began Friday and runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, if you want your own Final Fantasy Uber experience. But you’ll have a hard time matching the element of surprise experienced by these two Final Fantasy fans.
Of course, Lawhon gave the trip five stars in the app. “This was amazing!” she said.
“It was awesome,” Wetle agreed.
