With all of the tweaks coming to Apple’s iOS 10 this fall, let’s just slap a thumbs up or a heart or a smiley face on the news that more than 100 new and redesigned emoji characters will be available to iPhone and iPad users.

Apple announced Monday that the update will bring more gender options to existing characters. This will include new female athletes and professionals and redesigns of existing characters.

If you’re honest like us, perhaps you’ll admit that you can’t connect a lot of the emoji flags to the country they represent. But the new rainbow flag from Apple should be universally understood.

More family options are also being added, and Apple shared single mom and single dad.

Since Apple was reportedly behind the effort to remove a rifle emoji from new options, we’ll happily accept the squirt gun that shows up among the field.

Apple said it is “working closely with the Unicode Consortium to ensure that popular emoji characters reflect the diversity of people everywhere.”
