Fortune is reporting that rivals Amazon Web Services and virtualization firm VMware next week will make up and pledge to cooperate.

VMware’s chief executive three years ago described Amazon Web Services as a mortal enemy to VMware and its partners. But sources close to both companies confirmed that an announcement is coming in San Francisco next Thursday by AWS Chief Executive Andy Jassy, Fortune said. It’s likely that his VMware counterpart, Pat Gelsinger, will also be on hand. Neither company would comment on the report.

The goal is to make it easier for customers to run VMware software both on their own internal servers and on AWS’s public-cloud infrastructure.

The VMware-AWS pact would be roughly analogous to the partnership VMware announced with IBM in February, which blessed IBM’s Softlayer as VMware’s best public-cloud friend, Fortune said.
