AmazonEcho_VoiceDemo_040716-01When your sink is backed up and overflowing all across your kitchen floor, you don’t want to waste time searching for a plumber online — you just need someone at your house soon to fix the problem.

Starting today, while you mop up, Amazon’s Alexa AI assistant will call the plumber, through an integration with HomeAdvisor.

Once users enable the HomeAdvisor skill, they can ask Alexa to find a skilled professionals covering more than 500 home projects. Alexa will ask for the user’s zip code and phone number, after which they’ll get a phone call from a nearby professional to get things fixed. Users can also use the service for finding home improvement help or even landscaping pros.

HomeAdvisor Alexa

HomeAdvisor CEO Chris Terrill said in a statement, “With more than a decade of experience and over ten million service requests flowing through our system in the last year, HomeAdvisor is uniquely positioned to leverage smart home platforms such as Alexa-enabled devices to help homeowners instantly connect with service providers in the easiest and most convenient way imaginable.”

HomeAdvisor is going up against Amazon itself with the move. The retail giant introduced its own Home Services option last year, allowing customers to get products installed professionally or even schedule home cleaning services. However, Amazon’s services aren’t available through the company’s Alexa assistant yet.

But Alexa’s skills are still growing. The virtual assistant now can control all the major smart home gadgets, help you track your fitness and pay your credit card bills. The addition of two new Alexa-enabled Echo devices also expands the reach of the voice-enabled assistant.
