Kolibree connected toothbrush

LAS VEGAS — Is it a struggle to get your kids to brush their teeth? Do you crave data that shows whether your own tooth brushing technique is doing the job correctly? Or maybe you simply have too much money to spend? The Kolibree Smart Toothbrush on display at CES promises to help.

Looking very similar to a Sonicare or Oral-B electric toothbrush, the Kolibree Smart Toothbrush incorporates 3D motion sensors to track brushing activity and Bluetooth (no pun intended) for connectivity to your smartphone or tablet.

The company has two applications. One is a cartoon-style game that gamifies a child’s tooth brushing experience by rewarding them when they follow proper brushing technique through a series of adventures and points.

Parents can monitor their child’s progress through the app, and there is even a family leaderboard to generate some friendly tooth brushing competition.

There is also an adult application called “Coach” that does away with the game, but still allows you to monitor and improve your oral health by tracking your brushing technique and frequency.

Starting at $149, the Kolibree Smart Toothbrush is spendy, particularly if you are buying these for kids. To me, a little bit of parental coercion and $3 toothbrush seems like a better plan than this sort of investment, but this is CES, so of course it makes complete sense.
