According to Mashable, Shatner posted the request for selfies at the beginning of August via Twitter, asking Trekkies to send in shots giving the “live long and prosper” Vulcan salute. Nimoy died in February at the age of 83.
Shatner posted to Twitter that more than 6,000 images went into creating the Spock image, and he’s also submitting it to see if makes a Guinness World Record:
There are over 6,000 images in the Spock mosaic. I want to thank @CBS, @PictureMosaics, @stevenkirk & @SoundwavesTV for their help in this❤️

Shatner put out the call to create the portrait of Mr. Spock for GISHWHES, an international charity scavenger hunt run by Misha Collins of the CW’s Supernatural. GISHWHES encourages scavenger hunts on the weird, wild and fantastical side, while also supporting worthwhile causes.
What a cool idea. Here’s hoping they figure out a way to sell prints for charity, too. I have a feeling there are quite a few Star Trek fans out there who would want one.
