Drones are more than a mild way to amuse yourself if you get drunk or a weekend hobby, lest we forget their real purposes — to go where humans cannot for information-gathering purposes.

So, they’re the perfect devices to, say, fly over a live volcano in Iceland. ABC’s Good Morning America featured a segment on just that.

If you remember, the FAA is easing restrictions for media organizations to start testing more with drones as news-gathering tools. In a monitoring exercise here, watch these drones fly about 480 feet over ash, smoke and lava that is bubbling away at around 2,100 degrees. While the drones explore, the human operators are a comfortable three-quarters of a mile away.

We’re just happy to see a useful drone story with a good ending. Enjoy:
