starwarsAs the world anxiously awaits The Force Awakens, more plans for Star Wars films were revealed this week.

StarWars.com reported that not only is a date set for the second film in the new trilogy — Episode VIII will be in theaters May 26, 2017 — but that another stand-alone Star Wars film is in the works called Rogue One.

Rogue One, starring Felicity Jones from The Theory of Everything and directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla), will be the “first film in a unique series of big-screen adventures that explores the characters and events beyond the core Star Wars saga,” according to StarWars.com. It will start shooting this summer in London and is set for release on Dec. 16, 2016.

The follow-up to J.J. Abrams’ The Force Awakens will be in theaters May 26, 2017, exactly 40 years and a day after the first Star Wars hit theaters in 1977. Episode VIII will be written and directed by Rian Johnson (Looper), with Abrams as executive producer.
