netflix recommended TVSure they have government-supported health care, but when it comes to more modern-day conveniences, we Americans simply have more choice than our friends to the Great White North. Ask any Canadian about Trader Joe’s, and their eyes will practically pop out of their skulls from excitement.

And now, according to this new report by Media Technology Monitor via Marketing of new and emerging Canadian media habits, nearly a third, or 29 percent, of Canadians fess up to faking a U.S. IP address to access our, let’s admit it, better selection of content on Netflix.

Surveying more than 8,000 Canadians from all regions, the report also found that 40 percent of Canadian Netflix users are also using a U.S. IP address to access other American content than Netflix, too.

I’m with TechCrunch on this one, which states, “Let’s be honest here: Canadians often do get the short end of the stick when it comes to these services, and there’s a bustling business in helping them pretend to be just a few hundred miles south of where they actually reside in order to see a show they otherwise wouldn’t be able to catch.”

Here’s hoping this digital wall between us and our Canadian friends comes down sooner rather than later.
