Microsoft’s new web browser for Windows 10 will be called “Microsoft Edge,” the company announced this morning.
The new software, which will replace Internet Explorer as the primary browser in Microsoft’s next operating system, was previously known by the code name “Project Spartan.” Microsoft executive Joe Belfiore unveiled the name at the company’s Build developer conference this morning in San Francisco.

The new browser is designed in part to help the company move beyond IE’s checkered past as the company tries to fend off Chrome, Firefox and Safari.
The name is notable in part because it doesn’t include “Windows.” At the conference this morning, Microsoft gave no indication that it would expand the browser beyond Windows, but the choice of name would leave the door open to taking the browser cross-platform to other operating systems, as Microsoft has been doing with many of its apps.
Internet Explorer will continue to ship with Windows 10, in large part to support legacy enterprise applications.
