The latest version of Windows 10 ditches the Start Menu once again, but don’t worry: this time it’s only for small Internet of Things computers like the Raspberry Pi.
Microsoft today announced the new Windows 10 IoT Core for makers and embedded device manufacturers. The Start Menu isn’t the only thing missing; there’s no desktop or any other standard UI either.
That’s because many of the devices won’t even need a screen, or may only need a limited interface within the app like in this robotic air hockey table created by Microsoft to show off Windows 10 IoT Core.
Microsoft is looking to compete with with Linux-based options for the hackable mini-computers by providing the familiar Windows coding environment to the DIY community.
The stripped-down OS was first demoed at this year’s Build conference and has been in testers’ hands since then. The full list of features includes Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity, new APIs and better support for Node.js and Python.
Windows 10 IoT Core is a free download for the Raspberry Pi 2 and the MinnowBoard MAX. You can get started building your own Windows-powered IoT device over at the Windows Dev Center.
