The worst gig in America? Newspaper reporter.

Being a reporter has always been rough, but it’s becoming even tougher in the digital age. CareerCast put newspaper reporter at the bottom due to, “poor job prospects, low pay and layoffs have plagued the industry for the past several years.” They report the average salary is $36,267 and the industry has a negative growth outlook with a score of -13.33.

To put that into perspective, the other worst jobs list includes lumberjack, cook, taxi driver and enlisted military personnel.

The outlook isn’t completely bleak for print journalists, however. CareerCast states that “those with good writing skills often can find new employment in public relations, marketing, advertising and social media, where the outlook may be brighter.”

To rank the jobs, CareerCast looks at many factors, including pay, environment, stress, opportunity for advancement and more.
