A company that developed a remote-controlled play system for shelter animals now wants to make that technology available for pet lovers everywhere.

iPet Companion has launched a Kickstarter to help bring its system to the consumer market. Once set up, it allows you to watch and play with your pet from anywhere in the world.

The iPet Companion has been in use in animal shelters since 2010, allowing users to play with animals up for adoption. The HomePlay version will be a scaled-down, more affordable system that includes a camera, outlet adapter and controller. You can hook it up to almost any toy or device, and share the controller with friends and family, too.

To date, they’ve raised about $20,000 of their $150,000 goal with 39 days to go. Admittedly, that’s pretty steep, but they are seeking the funds to “purchase molds and tooling for large-scale production, and to reach the volume necessary to achieve a cost model that is appropriate for a home version.”

A backing of $25 goes toward buying a shelter a system; $149 gets you the early-bird pricing on the home system. If they are funded, the first systems are expected to ship out by next spring.
