Jeff Bezos of Amazon was in the news a lot in August.

Maybe we should just call August the month of Amazon.com.

The Seattle tech giant dominated headlines at GeekWire during the month, with three of the top 10 stories on the site during the month.

And it wasn’t just the reaction to the hyper-critical story in The New York Times, which described Amazon’s workplace culture as back-stabbing, mean and lacking empathy. Several scoops at GeekWire — including the uncovering of a mysterious new service called Flex — drove readership.

But it was our story on Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos’ reaction to the piece in the NYT that really captured the attention of readers. GeekWire was one of the first news outlets to obtain and publish the memo, which included the billionaire declaring that the story did not “describe the Amazon I know or the caring Amazonians I work with every day.”

The story took off like no other, with hundreds of comments and thousands of viewers at any one moment. It now ranks as the most read story on GeekWire.

geekwiresummit-logoBeyond breaking news on Amazon, we were busy during the month organizing the big GeekWire Summit on Oct. 1-2.

Now in its fourth year, the event draws hundreds of leaders in technology to Seattle for a two-day conference to discuss innovation, with top speakers such as Xbox chief Phil Spencer, Nike COO Eric Sprunk, Concur CEO Steve Singh, venture capitalist Dave McClure and many others. Early-bird tickets end Sept. 1, so make sure to come join us to see “live journalism” on stage.

We’re still having a ball breaking news and covering the stories that matter in the tech industry, and we’ve got a lot of fun stuff in store in the coming months as we expand our coverage to all things geek.

Without further ado, here’s a look back at the top stories for the month of August. Enjoy, and thanks for reading GeekWire!
