We reported during the launch of Windows 10 that Google Analytics was not properly tracking the new Microsoft Edge browser or Windows 10. It appears that Google has started tracking Windows 10 and Edge, but oddly Google Analytics will not show charts in Edge, even though the browser actually supports it.
We started seeing Edge in our browser reports yesterday, August 11. A couple of commenters on our original post apparently began seeing Edge in their reports last week, so it may be a phased rollout.
We also are now seeing Windows 10 in our Google Analytics operating systems reports. Up until yesterday, the operating system version was being falsely reported as NT.
Webmasters will be happy to be able to track the new OS and browser, but actually viewing Google Analytics statistics using Edge is still not working. Opening a Google Analytics screen with charts will get you the cryptic error that “Your browser does not support charts.”
It turns out that Edge does indeed support charts, it is just that Google Analytics is sniffing for user agent strings to determine when it can and when it cannot display charts.
Edge can emulate other browsers by changing the user agent string by accessing F12 Developer Tools. Choosing a user agent string of Chrome, Firefox or even Internet Explorer allows charts to be shown in Google Analytics.
Apparently the new Microsoft OS and browser came as a surprise to the Google Analytics team, despite months of advance notice and beta builds. We will monitor the situation and report back when Edge is fully supported in Google Analytics.
UPDATE (08/13) – We did hear back from Google after publication of this story that they do intend to add full Analytics support for Edge.
