The Bill Nye Film is now the most funded documentary project on Kickstarter ever.

The idea of independent filmmakers David Alvarado and Jason Sussberg, who admit they were obsessed with Nye as kids, the film will follow the Science Guy on some of his global adventures.

Nye’s film guys write on Kickstarter:

“Bill is about to take off his ‘Science Guy’ lab coat and battle the naysayers to create a more scientifically literate and engaged universe…We’re going to make a film about it. A film for science. A film for the cosmos. The full access, exclusive film about Bill Nye.”

The film project still has about 34 hours to go, and has raised more than $762,000 over its initial goal of $650,000 with over 15,000 backers.

That beats the previous Kickstarter documentary film record held by For the Love of Spock, the film about Leonard Nimoy by his son, Adam. More than 9,400 backers helped that film raise over $662,000.

Nye’s filmmakers have assembled their crew, and Nye is on board to let them follow him as he travels the world, advocating for science, as well as getting more of a insider’s look into his current LightSail project, which is testing solar power as a viable option to power space travel.

Nye posted his excitement about the film on Facebook:

“I have to say, I am incredibly proud of what The Bill Nye Film crew has done with this Kickstarter project. History was indeed made, and its thanks to you all: the passionate fans, and the science community at large. My hope is that this film will inspire the the citizens of our planet to appreciate the passion, beauty and joy of science as much as I do.”

For $25 you get the stream The Bill Nye Film first, its delivery date is set for June 2017, and there is a lot more cool Nye swag on offer, including T-shirts, coasters and doggie bowties.
