Starting this week, Bellevue-based domain registry Donuts will release 1.3 million new domain names through partnerships with domain name registrars. The new domains are spread across 144 of the new generic top level domains, like .movie, .limo and .deals.
Donuts focuses on the generic top level domains, which are now active for more than 6 million sites. While the company announced a few great replacements for the crowded .com top level domain last year (.wtf and .pizza among them), they weren’t available until now.
The rollout started yesterday with photography-related options, like .photography, .camera and .photos. Technology fields will be available on July 1, including endings like .email, .codes and .computers.
The rollout will continue throughout the summer and culminate with the release of thousands of two-character domain options for the new generic top level domains on September 9. For a full timeline, check out the press release.
Most domain names will be available for standard prices. They were previously withheld from the market to ensure there wouldn’t be any “name collision” resulting in leaked private data.
