GeekWire’s Taylor Soper at SeaTac Airport earlier today, preparing to depart for 10 days in China.

GeekWire reporter Taylor Soper departed Seattle on his way to China earlier today, preparing to spend the next 10 days reporting from Shanghai and Beijing. It’s one of our most ambitious reporting projects yet, and certainly the farthest we’ve ever sent anyone in search of good stories.

Before Taylor left the office last week, GeekWire’s John Cook and I sat down with him to talk about his plans for the trip, the challenges he’ll face, the people he’ll be meeting, the companies he’ll be visiting, the stories he’ll be covering, and what we hope to accomplish through this adventure.

In short, our hope is to give readers an up-close look at the companies, people and technologies shaping the world’s most populous nation and, by extension, the rest of the world. This trip fits into our broader vision for GeekWire, as a news site rooted in Seattle but offering a global perspective. And we know the trip will further deepen Taylor’s experience as a reporter, informing his reporting long after he returns.

Listen to our conversation below, and also check out Taylor’s preview of his trip and the some of the topics he’ll be covering. You can follow Taylor’s coverage over the next two weeks on GeekWire and our special coverage page.
