Busy Dexter is once again the site of a cyclist/vehicle incident — this time involving a hit-and-run captured by a GoPro.

According to King 5 (see video above), software engineer Trip Volpe was hit by the SUV last Friday on Dexter Avenue North and Thomas when he was riding home from work. Volpe also happened to record the incident with a GoPro, as he started recording his rides after being hit by a car two years ago.

In the video, you can see Volpe riding down the bike lane when the oncoming SUV takes a left turn in front of him. Upon closer inspection of the shot, you can see that the driver appears to be using his cell phone.

“That was my favorite one,” Volpe told King 5. “Not only did he make a turn against his right-of-way, but he was doing it with his hand on his steering wheel with his cell phone up to his face.”

Seattle Police told King 5 that Volpe did have the right-of-way, and the 18-year-old driver turned himself in shortly after the incident. Volpe sustained some minor injuries from the crash, including a sprained thumb and some road rash.

The incident has sparked more cyclist/driver comments via social media, and King 5’s Facebook feed is fielding heated comments from both sides of the bike vs. car debate:

Dexter is proving a particularly tricky corridor due to the influx of riders coming from North Seattle to South Lake Union and downtown. While the bike lanes are supposed to help relieve some of that congestion, it didn’t stop this incident from happening in March, in which a cyclist confronted a driver for parking in a bike lane, that went viral. The cyclist has since removed that video from his YouTube channel, but you can still some videos of him challenging drivers who park in the bike lane here.

With the ever-growing population in Seattle, the streets are only going to get more congested, so instead of trying to edge each other off the road, maybe it’s time to reinforce that everyone needs to play by the rules? Nobody comes out a winner in these types of accidents.
