Here’s one for the ages — free Wi-Fi hotspots on Mount Fuji in Japan.
According to AP via Huffington Post, a Japanese mobile network has started offering free Wi-Fi at eight hotspots on the mountain, including the 12,389-foot summit. Once users log-in with a special password, they’ll have up to 72 hours to use the service for free.
The free Wi-Fi is part of an initiative to encourage more visitors to the region, as well as part of Japan’s expansion of Wi-Fi in advance of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
As the Independent points out, though, Mount Fuji is hardly the “weirdest place to have it.” Everest has has Wi-Fi hotspots since 2010 and even the North Pole has been wired since 2005. Who knew?
