If you love design challenges, Stephen King and the classic horror film The Shining, this will be of interest.

The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colo., which King based his novel on, is having a contest to design its maze. Of course, as Pacific Northwesterners, we can proudly claim that Stanley Kubrick filmed it at the Timberline Lodge in Oregon, but the story was based on the Stanley.

“There are few hotels in the world that share a history and story as unique as that of the Stanley Hotel,” says John W. Cullen, owner of the property in the contest announcement. “I am thrilled to share this special moment in my life and the hotel’s history. We have built this place together over the years and I’m excited to invite everyone to be a part of its legacy through this special design contest.”

Those submitting will be working with a 61,500 square-foot hedge maze made of 1,600 to 2,000 alpine currant hedge bushes. Featured on the property’s front lawn, the winner will get their name on “permanent display” onsite. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place during the third annual Stanley Film Festival, scheduled for April 30.

Deadline for submissions is Jan. 31.
