While Google rolls out its small fleet of little bubbles this summer for some test drives, news from across the pond tells us the China’s Baidu has its own self-driving car dreams coming to fruition with BMW.

According to the Guardian, Baidu plans to “release a self-driving car with BMW by the end of the year.” The companies started working on the self-driving car project last spring and have been cruising around Beijing and Shanghai on test drives so far.

In addition to the obvious — BMW is a luxury carmaker vs. the more economical-looking Google car — Baidu said that its car would still have human controls “to assist drivers rather than replace them,” head of deep learning, Kai Yu, told the Guardian.
