iPhone6s-4Color-RedFish-PR-PRINT-e1441835328667The new iPhones will be released on Friday, but you needed to make a reservation if you wanted to buy one on opening day in an Oregon Apple Store. Apple is trying to combat so-called ‘sharks’ who buy hot new hardware in tax-free states to sell overseas where prices for new hardware are often higher.

In a footnote to a press release published by Apple today announcing that iOS 9 has been adopted faster than any other iOS update, the company noted that the “iPhone is available by reservation only in China, Hong Kong, Japan and U.S. stores in tax-free states.”

Oregon is one of five states in the U.S. that doesn’t collect sales tax on purchases.

Apple is no longer taking reservations for the new iPhone. That means residents of Oregon will not be able to purchase a new iPhone in-store on opening day.

Reservations for the new phones will reopen at 8 a.m. on Sept. 26, the day after the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus come out.

Apple is working to bring back the jubilant atmosphere of early iPhone launches, where fans would line up around the block (or further) to get their hands on the new device, high fiving employees on the way into the store. With online ordering and a growing resale market, the atmosphere of the lines has shifted recently, as showcased in a video vlogger Casey Neistat released after the iPhone 6 launch last year.

Apple has tried to limit resale of its phones before by limiting how many unlocked devices people can buy, but that has pushed up the presence of people paid to sit in line and buy the devices, further diluting the fans present at launch.

In states without sales tax, including Oregon, Delaware, Alaska and New Hampshire, those queues of dedicated line sitters have persisted for months, where resellers can make just a little bit more by buying the phone without any extra taxes.

While cities like Seattle and New York will still likely have professional resellers and line sitters, states with no sales tax may see a more festive atmosphere. However, with no walk up orders, lines are likely to be much smaller, restricted to those who were able to make a reservation before Apple shut them off or who just want to play with the display models of the new phones.

The iPhone 6s and 6s Plus go on sale at 8 a.m. on Friday. Reservations will reopen the following day.
