iPhone6s-4Color-RedFish-PR-PRINTApple announced that it will likely sell more than 10 million iPhones on its opening weekend. Preorders for the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus started on Friday and will arrive in stores on September 25.

According to an Apple statement obtained by CNBC, the demand for the iPhone 6s Plus have been “exceptionally strong and exceeded our own forecasts for the preorder period.”

“Customer response to iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus has been extremely positive and preorders this weekend were very strong around the world,” Apple said in the statement.

The new iPhone’s marquee feature is “3D Touch,” based on the tech that originally debuted in the Apple Watch. Using a finely tuned, pressure-sensitive touchscreen, the new iPhones will be able to sense how hard a user is pressing on the screen, resulting in new form of interaction.

The new iPhones also have better cameras (shooting up to 4K video) and a Live Photos feature that captures 1.5 seconds on either side of the picture to create moving images. The “Hey Siri” feature, which allows users to start a conversation with Siri without pressing any buttons, can now be activated even when the phone isn’t plugged in, thanks to a more efficient A9 processor added to the new phones.

Last year, Apple announced exact preorder numbers after the iPhone 6 and 6s went up for sale. In the first 24 hours last year, more than 4 million iPhones were ordered.

This year, Apple declined to give those figures. Still, Apple stock opened high on the news and continues to stay above yesterday’s market closing figure.
