amazonappsAmazon’s AppStore is turning four, and that means the company has another excuse to run one of its massive give-aways. The company is offering a selection of 34 apps (worth $105 in total) for free to anyone who downloads them onto an Android device through the AppStore.

They include the wildly popular “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2,” “Cut the Rope” and “World of Goo.” The AppStore powers the bulk of app purchasing on Amazon’s Fire tablets, smartphone and set-top boxes, and is also available on Blackberry smartphones and other Android devices. According to a blog post accompanying the sale, Amazon currently has 400,000 apps on its store.

Sales like these are important to the company, since its hardware doesn’t have access to Google’s Play Store, which is the more dominant app distribution platform for Android devices. Promotions like these may help get users to try the AppStore for themselves, thereby creating a larger market for developers to deploy to.

Growing the AppStore is going to be key if Amazon wants to improve its standing in the smartphone market. One of the biggest drawbacks to the Fire phone is that it’s stuck in Amazon’s ecosystem, so increasing the availability of popular apps on its store should help improve sales if the company decides to release another handset.
