Yahoo COO Henrique de Castro will be leaving the company tomorrow, according to an SEC filing from the company today. No reason was given for his departure.
Marissa Mayer hired de Castro away from Google in 2012, where he was president of partners business solutions, to run the company’s ad business.
But de Castro hasn’t been able to produce the desired results for Yahoo’s ad business. Recent reports have said that his relationship with Mayer became strained in recent months, while the company’s advertising revenue hasn’t been hitting targets.
For Yahoo, which is reportedly getting about a third of its revenue from its agreement with Microsoft, stepping up its own ad business is critical if Marissa Mayer wants to step away from her predecessor’s deal with Steve Ballmer.
Meanwhile, de Castro was also reportedly jockeying for power with a number of other high-profile Yahoo executives, including sales head Ned Brody and advertising chief Kathy Savitt, which may have also contributed to his departure.
Yahoo declined to comment beyond the statement in the filing.
