comcastNeed to return your Xfinity cable box, modem, remote control, or anything else? No searching for an obscure Comcast office in the boonies.

That’s the promise of a partnership announced today between the cable giant and The UPS Store.

Under the arrangement, Xfinity customers will be able to return equipment to Comcast by dropping it off at a UPS Store. It can be dropped off as-is, unpackaged, and will be shipped back to Comcast free of charge.

Customers will receive a receipt confirming the equipment return, with the ability to track the return.

The service is available at more than 4,400 UPS Stores in the United States.

Update, Nov. 18: I just tested this with an old cable modem and TV remote at the UPS Store in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood, and it worked relatively smoothly.

I had been hoping to literally drop it off at the counter of the UPS Store and leave, but the check-in process took about 5 minutes, including the clerk scanning in the modem via bar code; getting my name and phone number; having me sign for the charge on Comcast’s shipping account; and printing out a receipt.

Still, much easier than traveling to a Comcast location across town.
